The Jordan Hotels Association participated in the working retreat dedicated to adopting the final outcomes of the “Circular Solutions to Plastic Pollution in Jordan” project, held on July 30 and 31, 2026, at the Hilton Dead Sea Hotel. The retreat was organized by the Ministry of Environment, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with the participation of members of the project’s Technical Committee and representatives of relevant government and private-sector entities, as well as national and international institutions.

The Association participated in its capacity as a representative of the hotel sector and a member of the project’s Technical Committee, reaffirming its commitment to supporting national initiatives aimed at advancing environmental sustainability and developing policies and practices that contribute to reducing plastic pollution and promoting circular economy principles across various sectors, including the hospitality sector.

The working retreat aimed to review and adopt the project’s key outputs, including the final version of the standards and technical specifications for single-use plastic products, the completion of the overarching framework for the strategy to reduce the use of such products, and discussions on a strategy to combat littering. These objectives were addressed through specialized working sessions and discussion groups focused on developing practical and applicable solutions.

Participants also discussed a range of technical areas related to reducing unnecessary packaging, designing for recyclability, biodegradability and compostability, reuse and refill systems, as well as promoting the use of recycled materials and developing plastic packaging recycling systems. These efforts are intended to support the transition toward a more sustainable circular economy.

The Jordan Hotels Association emphasized that its participation in this initiative reflects its commitment to representing the hotel sector in the development of national environmental policies and promoting the adoption of sustainable practices within hotel establishments, particularly in light of global trends toward reducing the use of single-use plastic products and minimizing their environmental impact.

The Association also noted that the hospitality sector is one of the key sectors capable of making a positive impact in environmental sustainability by adopting innovative waste management solutions, encouraging the use of sustainable alternatives, and raising awareness among employees and guests about the importance of reducing plastic pollution.

This participation forms part of the Jordan Hotels Association’s ongoing efforts to support national initiatives and strengthen partnerships with government and international institutions, contributing to enhancing the competitiveness of Jordan’s hotel sector, embedding sustainable development principles, and advancing Jordan’s environmental protection objectives and transition toward a circular economy.
