Tourist Accommodation Establishments Indicators 2017

Latest figures have showed a decrease in the performance of five and four star hotels in the first half of this year, compared with the same period of 2016, as there was a significant drop in the number of hotel arrivals (Guests) of about 14.8% and 24.2% respectively.
The number of occupied rooms in five star hotels had also witnessed a decline from more than 625K to around 569K, which indicates a 9% decrease. As for the number of occupied rooms in four star hotels the decrease was even more intense of around 18.7% that declined from 269K in the first half of 2016 to around 218K in the same period of 2017.
Despite this deteriorated performance, the number of overnight tourists increased for the comparison period by 11% and this increase didn’t reflect on the hotels’ performance. This is due to the fact that a considerable number of Arab tourists and Jordanians living abroad (constituting around 74% of overnight tourists), either own apartments in Jordan or stay at furnished apartments which aren’t regulated by the tourism sector, in addition to the fact that many of them are visiting other destinations such as Turkey, Sharm Al-Sheikh, Lebanon, Georgia, etc. through the Jordanian border crossings and returning back to their home countries also through the Kingdom’s borders, which is creating the problem of double counting.
